The Latin Diocese of Trivandrum was established on July 1st 1937 by the Papal Bull “ In Ora Malabarica “ and subsequently elevated as Arch Diocese on June 3, 2004 through Apostolic Bull “Sacratissimi Cordis Jesu “.

In 1961, following the instruction from H.E. Bishop Peter Bernard Pereira, the then Bishop of Trivandrum Latin Diocese, Rev. Fr. Xavier Braganza bought a piece of land along the National Highway. This move was with the intention of coordinating the catholic people working in Government offices, Medical College, Engineering College etc. Under the direct supervision of the diocese, the construction of the church was started in the same year. It was in 1962 and was blessed by His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Peter Bernard.

Rev. Fr. Xavier Braganza was in charge of the church. He used to celebrate the Holy Eucharist only on Sundays and Fridays with just seven Catholic families. But slowly the parish began to develop as people flocked to the place for their job and their children’s higher studies. People from different rites prayed together reflecting the spirit of the early Christian communities.

In 1969 Rev. Fr. Celestine OCD who was then in charge of this church for a short while, initiated the construction of the parochial house. During the same period the Grotto, sponsored by Mr. Antony Xaviour. Till 1976, the parish was under the able leadership of Rev. Fr. Xavier Braganza who converted many into Christians and created plenty of job opportunities for the poor people.

When Rev. Fr. Xavier Braganza retired, the parish went into the hands of Rev. Fr. Joseph S.A.C, who was then living in Pallotigiri Seminary. He served the parish for one year (1976-1977) and many Jesuit priests helped him in his pastoral ministries during this period. Taking into consideration the shortage of priests in the diocese, the parish was handed over to Rev. Fr. Vincent Vadakedath in 1977. He was then his higher studies in Kerala University, Kariavattom. He served the parish till 1979. It was in the same year that for the first time, a diocesan priest Rev. Fr. Peter Augustine was appointed who began to serve the parish full time.

Rev. Fr. Peter Augustine, an able leader and renowned scholar, worked hard for the growth of the parish. As a result, he was successful in forming a community which cooperated with him in a number of construction works for the development for the parish. He was instrumental in the construction of the Parish hall, Shrine, entrance road to the church and various development programmes. In 1990 he was transferred to catholic hostel and Rev. Fr. Ladislaus Mendez took charge of the parish. In 1991, Rev. Fr. Charles Leon who became the director of TSSS was appointed as the parish priest to make it more convenient for his pastoral ministry.

Basic Christian Community units were established in 1991, under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Charles Leon. The parish council was formed together with a finance committee. Plenty of renewal activities that were formed in the diocese were also implemented in the parish and as a result the parish grew in its integrity. In 1993 the parish bagged second prize in catechism in the diocesan level. That year around 130 students and 15 teachers actively participated in the catechism. In 1994 Rev. Fr. Charles Leon was transferred from the parish and Rev. Fr. Sebastian Pereira was appointed. He carried on all the developmental activities of the parish. In 1999 due to ill health Rev. Fr. Sebastian got transferred and Rev. Fr. Charles Leon was re-appointed. In 2000 the church was repaired and extended in order to accommodate more faithful inside the church. 5 cents of land was made available for free by Marynilayam Convent to construct the church. Most Rev. Dr. Soosa Pakiam blessed the church and dedicated ir to the faithful.

In 2003, Rev. Fr. John D’ Bosco was appointed as the parish priest. With his arrival the liturgy has became more lively since people participate in it more actively. A notable feature is that, everyone in the parish started to sing during the Eucharistic services with the parish priest. Sunday evening mass was reintroduced. Lots of people are attracted by Fr. BOSCO's graceful celebration of th Holy Mass and his inspiring homilies.
